Slowdown expected in holiday travel through 2009
Book now to avoid higher prices
There are rumors among the travel industry that after October 31, there may be a spike in airfare, hotels and car rental rates.
With the start of the winter travel season on November 1st, many companies do plan to increase prices to recoup losses incurred over the past year. The downturn in the economy overall will also see less travelers willing to pay the higher prices.
Travel agents advise to book now for holiday winter travel and even for next year's spring travel. Lock in today's rates before they are adjusted higher in the coming weeks and months.
39% of Consumers Traveling for Thanksgiving 2008
Tough Economic Times Not Deterring Holiday Travelers
With the economy in distress it wouldn't be surprising if people chose to stay home for the holidays this year. Yet, a recent Harris Interactive survey commissioned by Hotwire.com (R), a leading travel discount site, found that Thanksgiving is a holiday that people won't skip.
According to the survey, 39 percent of consumers will be traveling this Thanksgiving, which while seemingly low, is the same as those who opted to travel last year. And, similar to last year, of those consumers who will be traveling this holiday, 74 percent will travel shorter distances of 200 miles or less for the holiday. As business travelers vacate for the Thanksgiving holiday, the number of empty hotel rooms increases. Hotwire has special relationships with major hotel suppliers to help them fill these hotel rooms that would otherwise go unsold, which means deep discounts for holiday travelers looking to take advantage of these great rates and stay in a hotel as opposed to a packed holiday house. Continue reading.
Some discounts will be available
There are some advantages, though, to the economy downturn in the travel industry. While some prices will rise, there may be discounts in restaurant specials, travel packages, local staycation offers and discount in admissions to tourist attractions and entertainment. Smaller companies may better adapt in many cases by lowering prices to drawn in business.
Another growing option is vacation packages, offered by travel agencies like Southwest Airline Vacations and timeshare presentations as a way to fill empty rooms and seats. These cheap vacation packages often bundle a weekend with dining and amusement credits. Southwest Vcations, part of Southwest Airlines, bundles air, hotel and even car rental. Theme vacations from SWA add an extra excitement.
Inclusive vacation deals are cheaper
Rising airfare and hotel rates can only be beat with everything is bundled into a single vacation package.
Many travel companies offer a set vacation package with a set itinerary. Several online travel agencies, like Travelocity, Southwest Air Vacations (SWV) and Priceline, specialize in creating a more individualized trip.
You can book your own departure and return flight, set the number of nights you want to stay and decide where you want to go when you get there. FInd several special holiday vacation packages.
